Virtual Events Help Provide a Serotonin Spark During the Cold Winter Months
For those celebrating winter holidays such as Christmas and Hanukah, this season may be “merry and bright”, yet the short days, long nights, and colder temperatures may have you feeling a little “depressed and dim”.
Social distancing and the increasing rate of spread of COVID-19 has further complicated matters, especially in places where colder temps require gatherings to move indoors. Now more than ever, we have to fight through these obstacles and forge a new path for spending time in social environments, finding new venues to maintain friendships, and ultimately, find new tools to maintain a healthy mental state.
Mental Health Matters
Just in case you haven’t been told this personally, your mental health matters! It is arguably the cornerstone to your overall well-being. Much of the energy and resolve that goes into your overall health begins with your mental state.
According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA) nearly 40 million Americans age 18 or older are affected by Anxiety disorders. That’s roughly 18% of the US Population! Chances are you, or someone you know, is fighting for their mental well-being.
Social Distancing’s Impact
While social distancing is a prominent feature in helping to slow the spread of Coronavirus, even the CDC recognizes the negative impact it can have on our mental health.
More time spent indoors (multiplied by social distancing measures) means more time spent in isolation, which is a major contributor to anxiety and depression. To break the grip, you’ll have to get creative when it comes to connecting with your friends and loved ones.
Technology like video chat (think FaceTime, Google Duo) and group video conferencing (Zoom or Google Meet) can help alleviate some of the feelings of isolation, but technology alone can’t replace the unique experiences and atmospheres typical social environments like meeting friends for drinks, home-hosted game nights, or going together to the movies would provide.
Move From Socially Distant to Distantly Social
No one wants to spend night after night endlessly scrolling through their Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok feeds. And, let’s face it, Story updates in your pajamas aren’t necessarily noteworthy. Continuing to converse with your friends is important, but you want to do something fun and different as well.
